Olivo powers Fish past Phils

Baseball Betting Lines

09/08/2007 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Miguel Olivo went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored as the Florida Marlins downed the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-3, to open a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Cody Ross had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in one while Byung-Hyun Kim (9-6) pitched six innings of seven-hit, three-run ball for the Marlins, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

J.D. Durbin (6-5) got the loss after giving up five runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Pat Burrell hit a three-run home run for the Phillies, who have dropped five of their last six games.

Philadelphia now sits six games behind the Mets for first place in the NL East and 3 1/2 games behind San Diego for the wild card.

Florida took the lead in the second inning. With runners on first and third and one out, Ross punched a double to left that scored both Miguel Cabrera and then Mike Jacobs, when Burrell misplayed fumbled the ball in the corner. After Olivo walked, Kim laid down a sac bunt that Ryan Howard fielded cleanly, but threw into the outfield trying to get Ross at third, allowing both Ross and Olivo to score for a 4-0 lead.

Burrell atoned for his error in the third when he blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall that just barely stayed fair to make it a 4-3 game.

However, the Marlins got a run back in the fourth when Olivo knocked a solo homer into the left field stands for a 5-3 advantage.

The Phillies had a chance to make it a one-run game in the fifth when Rod Barajas led off with a double, but Kim retired the next three batters to kill the threat.

Florida tacked on some insurance in the eighth as Olivo's double off the center field wall plated Reggie Abercrombie for a 6-3 lead.

Game Notes

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
