12/02/2011 - Sun City, South Africa (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell posted a five-under 67 on Friday to take the second-round lead of the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

McDowell finished 36 holes at the Gary Player Country Club at seven-under 137 and is one shot clear of several players in this limited-field, lucrative event in Sun City.

Defending champion and first-round co-leader Lee Westwood (70), Jason Dufner (68), Robert Karlsson (69) and Martin Kaymer (68) share second place at minus- six.

Simon Dyson and Kyung-tae Kim both carded rounds of two-under 70 on Friday and share sixth at four-under 140.

They're all chasing the man from Northern Ireland who won last year's U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

McDowell birdied the first hole, then parred his next seven holes. After a fortunate par at No. 8, McDowell caught fire around the turn to vault atop the leaderboard.

At the par-five ninth, McDowell's second barely cleared water and he got up and down from the fringe for birdie. He birdied the par-five 10th and made it three in a row with a birdie at 11.

McDowell chipped in for yet another birdie at 13 and was one stroke clear of the field.

Trouble loomed on the par-five 14th. McDowell knocked his drive into the bushes and took two strokes just to get it back to the fairway. He hit his fourth from the short grass into a greenside bunker, blasted out, then took two putts for a double-bogey.

"The second shot can only be described as an air shot, really," admitted McDowell. "My ball was sitting on a rock, and I contacted it about an inch behind the ball, hit the rock and my club just bounced right over the top of the ball."

McDowell fell out of the lead after the disaster at 14, then re-joined the mix at the top with a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-three 16th. He moved clear of everyone with another 20-footer for birdie, this time at the closing hole, to grab sole possession of first.

"There is so much trouble lurking on this golf course," said McDowell. "You've got to be really decisive off the tee. The second you start steering, you get into big trouble."

World No. 1 Luke Donald managed a one-under 71 and is tied for eighth with Denmark's Anders Hansen, who shot a three-under 69 on Friday. The pair is knotted at three-under 141.

NOTES: First-round co-leader and reigning Masters champion Charl Schwartzel struggled to a two-over 74 on Friday and fell into 10th at minus-two...Open champion Darren Clarke is 11th at one-under par, followed by Francesco Molinari, whose five-over 77 left him at the bottom of the leaderboard at plus-five.

Coaches and bettors alike are desperate to make sense of the new time-keeping rules on the NCAA gridiron. One of the big stories to come out of the Ohio State-Texas clash last weekend was Texas coach Mack Brown's criticism of the NCAA's new clock rules that are intended to shorten the duration of college football games, therefore affecting college football betting.

"They scored with six minutes left and the game was over before we had a chance to do anything," Brown told ESPN.com. "I really hope whoever made these changes will go back and look them over."

Sure, it might be sour grapes; the Buckeyes thoroughly trounced the defending national champion Longhorns 24-7. However, Brown isn't alone in giving the changes their due thought. Bettors are also wondering about them, albeit for a completely different reason. Most experts agree that the changes will result in games being shortened by anywhere from 10 to 20 plays. The obvious consequence is lower scores, with more time rolling off the clock during changes of possession. (The Ohio State-Texas game flew well under the total of 52.)

According to research at the online sportsbook MySportsbook.com, more than 18 plays a game disappeared last weekend into thin air. That's a 10-percent reduction. In 2005, a typical game had 168.58 plays. For 2007 already, it's down to 150.26.

As a result, teams combined to gain an average of about 100 fewer yards a game last weekend versus the 2005 openers. Scoring was also down by about 4.5 points (attention Las Vegas sports lines).

Of course, oddsmakers were able to adjust to the changes before the season started. Proof of that came as the over went a balanced 8-9 at My Sportsbook on Saturday.

Other angles to consider:A shorter game should theoretically result in shorter lines. Less possessions means a better chance the game will be decided by three or seven points. For example, what might have been a 20-10 final score in 2005 may end at

17-10 in 2007. Granted, a 24-17 game last year might end at 21-17 these days, but the former - a three- or seven-point advantage being preserved as opposed to created - is the most likely scenario.
